Understanding Pigmentation

What is pigmentation?

Pigmentation is common. Understanding it is the first step.

The Basics

Pigmentation is part of the natural biology of your skin.

Your skin produces a pigment called melanin, which contributes to its natural colour. When melanin production or distribution becomes increased in certain areas, those areas can appear darker than the surrounding skin. This is commonly described as hyperpigmentation.1

It may appear as patches, spots or areas of uneven skin tone.

Different forms of facial pigmentation can have different causes. These include melasma, marks left after inflammation such as acne, and pigmentation associated with sun exposure.

That is one reason pigmentation can be difficult to approach with a single quick fix.

Indian Skin

Pigmentation is especially relevant to Indian skin.

Pigmentation concerns are not uncommon among Indian women. A dermatological study of 1,204 women aged 18–84 across Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata found that facial pigmentary changes were widespread across the study population.2

Among women over 30

More than 70%

had more than 10 hyperpigmented spots on the face in the study.2

Among women aged 40–65

About 30%

were found to have melasma at its peak prevalence in the study population.2

The prevalence of melasma also differed considerably between cities—from 15.3% in Chennai to 27.7% in Mumbai—showing that pigmentation does not affect every woman, age group or population in exactly the same way.2

Pigmentation is common. But every person's pigmentation is not the same.

That distinction matters.

Causes

Why does pigmentation happen?

There is rarely one explanation that applies to everyone. Visible pigmentation may be influenced by factors such as:

Sun exposure

Light exposure can stimulate pigment production and can contribute to the darkening or persistence of some forms of hyperpigmentation.³

Hormonal influences

Hormonal changes can play a role in conditions such as melasma, including pigmentation associated with pregnancy.³

Inflammation

Acne, irritation or other inflammation can sometimes leave darker marks behind after the original inflammation has settled.⁴

Individual skin characteristics

Your natural skin tone, genetics and the way your skin responds to environmental and biological triggers can influence how pigmentation develops and behaves.³

This is why two people who appear to have similar pigmentation may not respond to skincare in exactly the same way.
